Tea and Coffee by Maya Martinovic
They make me tea. I make them coffee.
They make sure it's chamomile, they know it's my favourite tea. I make sure it has two teaspoons of sugar, I know they like their coffee sweet. They use my favourite mug, I use theirs. A simple task, a simple morning. Yet, it's more than that. It's every morning. Every cup of tea, every cup of coffee. It's always chamomile, always two teaspoons of sugar. I could make my own tea, they could make their own coffee. It tastes better when they make it for me. If you asked me years ago, “What does tea mean to you?”, I would be confused. “It's just tea.” I'd say. Ask me now, I'd say “Love.” It's everything to me. It's us. It's chamomile tea in my favourite mug, made by you. It's our mornings, together. Tea and coffee, our gift to each other. |
